1973 Rolex Datejust (Ref. 1601-3) Blue Sigma Dial

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic and most beloved Rolex watches ever made, even though the Datejust was launched in 1945 it has remained a timeless classic and is instantly recognizable as an item of refined quality and functional design. The Datejust can be worn just as easily with a suit as it can be with jeans and a tee shirt.

A Sigma dial is a Rolex dial named for the letters printed at the bottom of the dial below the 6 o'clock marker. Most Rolex dials are commonly marked with “T Swiss T,” under the 6 o'clock marker, however, a Sigma dial is marked “σ T SWISS T σ.” This signifies the use of gold components within the dial.

This piece would make an excellent start for a new vintage collector, or be a great addition to an expanding collection. We love the early Rolex Datejust for its simplicity and its classic sophistication.

CASE & BRACELET

The stainless steel case is in overall exceptional condition and it appears to have only been gently polished in the past as the very thick lugs retain strong factory finishing and remain symmetrical. The stainless steel engine-turned bezel displays light signs of use and is believed to remain unpolished. The original Rolex 6251H rolled-link Jubilee bracelet with 55 end pieces retains 21 links that show typical stretch for the style and age of the bracelet and will fit up to a 7 1/2-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The gorgeous "pie-pan" Blue sunburst "Sigma" dial is in exceptional, near-perfect condition, showing no damage with only nominal patina around the lume plots which is very common for colored dials. The tritium lume plots have achieved a strong golden-yellow patina, under U.V. light inspection all of the lume plots remain present and only the 10'clock lume plot exhibits light degradation. The original tritium hands match the dial nicely and show no degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The original metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's.
