1979 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513) Mk. III Maxi "Lollipop" Dial

$ 17,850

The Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The 5513 is simple yet sophisticated and rugged. The ref. 5513 was first introduced in 1962 and ceased production in late 1989. The ref. 5513 is a purpose-built dive watch that lacks the date function like other Rolex Submariner models.

The Maxi Mk III dial is a favorite among many 5513 collectors as the Mk III features some of the largest lume plots of the Maxi dial variants and subsequently is one of the most uncommon Maxi dials as well, only existing between the 5mil and 6mil serial ranges. In some instances, the extra large lume plots of the Mk III Maxi dials are seen with the lume plots touching, or nearly touching, the 5-minute markers of the minute track, in which case the watch is given the nickname "Lollipop".

There are several features of the Maxi Mk III dial that are distinct and specific:

  • The large tritium hour plots that often appear to touch the 5-minute hash marks
  • The large “open 6’s”, the unique serif on the “f” in the depth rating
  • The fact that the two “0’s” in the “200m” depth rating line up directly underneath the “N and E” in “SUBMARINER”

CASE & BRACELET

The exceptional case remains in very impressive condition, featuring full chamfers down the thick and symmetrical lugs which exhibit honest signs of light use and minimal evidence of previous polishing present. The original Mk III "fat font" bezel insert features a dark blue and grey ombre fade and shows gentle signs of use with the tritium pearl intact. The watch was sourced on a Rolex "USA Made" oval-link Jubilee bracelet that shows normal stretch for its style and age and will fit up to a 7-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The matte black Mk III Maxi "Lollipop" dial is virtually flawless, showing no age or damage whatsoever. The tritium lume plots have achieved a handsome creamy patina with no degradation present when inspected under UV light. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly, under U.V. light inspection all the hands retain the original lume, though the hour and seconds hands exhibit some very subtle cracking and appear to have been professionally stabilized in the past, while the minute hand remains fully intact with no repair present.
