1979 Rolex Day-Date (Ref. 18038) “Burlwood Dial”
For a short period of time in the 70s and 80s, Rolex manufactured timepieces featuring exotic materials including dials made from a variety of minerals, woods, and stones. Burlwood, Black Onyx, African Mahogany, Lapis Lazuli, and Birch were all used for dials during this time. Most commonly these watches were produced in 18K yellow gold. These variants are always strikingly vivid with high contrast and minimalist design. Because these exotic dials were only in production for a short time, they have always been highly collectible. Good examples of these original references are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This specific 1979 Day Date ref 18038 is absolutely stunning and would make a great addition to an existing collection or as a stand-alone watch that is strikingly different and employs the use of mixed natural materials. This rare Day-Date is sure to be a stand out among the executive crowd and will always remain sought after.
