1977 Rolex Submariner (Ref. 5513) Pre-Comex Dial
The Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 is the embodiment of the classic dive watch. The 5513 is simple yet sophisticated and rugged The Ref. 5513 was first introduced in 1962 and ceased production in late 1989. The Ref. 5513 is a purpose-built dive watch that lacks the date function like other Rolex Submariner models. (eg. Ref. 1680.)
This 1977 Rolex Submariner ref. 5513 is in absolutely stunning condition and retains its original Pre-Comex dial. The Pre-Comex dial is only seen in the 5 mil serial range cases and the name "Pre-Comex" was coined for this dial as it shared a lot of the same dial fonts and characteristics of the Rolex ref. 5514 Comex watches.
The unique characteristics of the Pre-Comex dials are:
- Open 6‘s in the depth rating.
- The Rolex coronet is very fat at the bottom
- The “=” sign in the depth rating sits directly above and slightly to the left of the “A” in “SUBMARINER” instead of being in the center or slightly to the right as seen in the other dials
- The letter “L” in “ROLEX” sits left of center under the coronet and features strong serifs.

CASE & BRACELET
The thick and symmetrical case is in remarkable condition, retaining slight chamfers and showing only very minimal evidence of being previously polished with light signs of honest use. The original Mk. III "fat-font" bezel insert is in exceptional condition with an even subtle dark grey fade and retains its matching tritium pearl at the 12 o'clock position. The original Rolex 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end pieces retains 10 links that display almost no stretch from use.
DIAL & HANDS
The original and rare "Pre-Comex" Submariner dial is downright gorgeous. The dial itself displays a subtle texture and remains clean and even overall. The tritium lume plots have aged to an exceptional custard yellow coloration and exhibit no degradation under U.V. light inspection. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly, the hands themselves show some light oxidation and under U.V. light the lume remains stable showing no degradation.
