Universal Geneve
1967 Universal Genève Space-Compax (Ref. 885104/01)
Universal Genève created its first chronograph in 1917 and roughly 18 years later, they launched their first “Compax” in which many variations were to follow. Vintage Universal Genève’s sports watches are particularly sought after thanks to their variety, unique designs, and larger sports watch case sizing. One of Universal’s most unusual, yet attractive chronograph designs, was the “Space-Compax". In particular, the Universal Genève Space Compax ref 885104/01 was designed to endure harsh conditions while supporting excellent functionality. There are have been various speculations about the intended purpose and inspiration behind the design of the Space-Compax, but there has never been an official statement to support any of these theories. The most probable conclusion is that the "Space Compax" was designed to replace the Omega Speedmaster as the watch of preference by NASA during a time in history in which the space exploration was at the forefront of international news and public consciousness. The eye-catching reverse panda dial paired with the distinctive UG handset housed in the asymmetrical case is absolutely stunning.
This early example remains in a time capsule-like condition! The dial remains clean and clear, the case retains factory finishing and geometry while showing little wear. The original bracelet shows no stretch and the watch wears beautifully. The watch even retains its original hang tags which are rare and uncommon for a watch of this specific era. This watch is not only eye-catching but unique and highly desirable!
