1947 Omega Cosmic Triple Date Moonphase (Ref. 3944) 18k YG

One of the most celebrated complications throughout wristwatch and horological history is undoubtedly the Moonphase complication. Seen in clocks dating back to the 16th century, but wasn’t housed in a wristwatch until 1925 when Patek Philippe created the first perpetual calendar Moonphase created from a modified movement intended for a ladies pendant watch.

In 1947 Omega introduced the first watch in their Cosmic line, ref. 3944, which featured the in-house Omega cal. 381 movement. This was Omega's first iteration of a perpetual calendar Moonphase wristwatch. The Cosmic model line was in production for roughly 9 years with various references and iterations.

The ref. 3944 is not only the first Cosmic for Omega, but it’s also the most unique and desired. Featuring an oversized 32.5x36mm case with elaborate fancy lugs. The ref. 3944 was produced in 14k yellow gold for the American market and 18k yellow gold for the European markets, and in Rose Gold which is the rarest of the three metals produced.

CASE & BRACELET

The oversized and unique 18k yellow gold case is in remarkable condition for its age and appears to have been lightly polished in the past as the "fancy lugs" still retain their original shape and dimensions. The gold "Omega" signed crown is a replacement, the calendar push buttons all remain original to the watch. The caseback remains clean and shows a slight rosy patina. The watch will come on a 2pc handmade leather strap.

DIAL & HANDS

The Omega Cosmic moonphase dial is in incredible original condition, showing no evidence of being refinished or repaired, which can be common for these early moonphase examples. The dial itself curves at all four corners giving the dial a larger presence and sense of depth. The gold markers are original to the watch and some have started to take on a dark patina which is common and correct for aged gold. The gold hands, including the 6 o'clock sweep-seconds hand are original to the watch and remain in excellent condition. The moonphase disc and calendar wheels are original, the moon-phase disc does show some aging.

ACCESSORIES

None. The watch is functioning perfectly and keeping time, previous service history is unknown.
