The Rolex GMT is the jet-setting icon of the Rolex sports watch family. Like the Rolex Submariner, the Rolex GMT is sophisticated, rugged, and versatile. In 1954 Pan Am started using the newly designed Boeing 707 which allowed for Pan Am to fly transcontinentally and is said to have started the commercially available jet age. In the same year, Rolex received a request from PanAm to create a technical pilots watch which indicated two time zones simultaneously that could be issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul transcontinental international flights. The original Rolex GMT Master has a fourth 24-hour hand directly displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand but on a 24-hour scale. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and, using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel, set to the correct offset thus displaying a second-time-zone on the 24-hour scale.

CASE & BRACELET

The excellent and sharp pointed crown guard case has just come back from polishing. The red back insert is taking on a beautiful fade showing very little wear from use. Case back is stamped IV. 60 and watch will come on a 2pc Handmade Suede Leather Strap. The bezel is the original early milled bezel that is era correct. The reference and the serial are partially worn but the serial number has been inscribed on the inside of the casebook as can be seen in the photos.

Dial & Hands

This handsome glossy gilt chapter ring dial has achieved a wonderful patina showing slight makings around the base of the hands. The radium lume plots have taken on a lovely ivory coloration with very little lume degradation in the 2, 4, and 5 o'clock positions. The gilt radium hands remain in excellent original condition and the lume has aged to slightly darker coloration to the dial with very minor lume loss in the mercedes hour hand. The "little GMT hand" is a charming and rare feature that creates a pleasant vintage aesthetic that is not commonly seen. The original metallic date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.
