The Rolex GMT is the jet-setting icon of the Rolex sports watch family. Like the Rolex Submariner, the Rolex GMT is sophisticated, rugged, and versatile. In 1954 Pan Am started using the newly designed Boeing 707 which allowed for Pan Am to fly transcontinentally and is said to have started the commercially available jet age. In the same year, Rolex received a request from PanAm to create a technical pilots watch which indicated two time zones simultaneously that could be issued by the airline to their crews on long-haul transcontinental international flights. The original Rolex GMT Master has a fourth 24-hour hand directly displaying the same time zone as the standard 12-hour hand but on a 24-hour scale. This GMT hand enabled the crews to set the watch to GMT or another time zone, and, using the rotatable 24-hour scale bezel, set to the correct offset thus displaying a second-time-zone on the 24-hour scale.

CASE & BRACELET

The excellent pointed crown guard case is thick with factory finishing still slightly present, showing light honest wear from use. The watch retains it's original "bottle cap" bezel with a wonderfully faded "fat-font" Pepsi bezel insert. The Rolex 7836 folded-link Oyster bracelet with 358 end pieces remains in unpolished condition showing some stretch from use.

DIAL & HANDS

The glossy gilt chapter ring exclamation dial is in excellent condition showing no spider cracking or chips. The dial itself is in the beginning process of going "tropical" and is a dark chocolate coloration in the sunlight. The original lume plots have aged to a nice brown coloration, exhibiting no degradation when inspected under U.V. light. The exclamation dot at the 6 o'clock position on the dial is present but does show some degradation which is common for the reference. The original hands have aged slightly darker than the dial, under U.V. light inspections the hour, minute and little GMT hand exhibit some degradation, the sweep-seconds hand remains fully intact. The metallic date wheel is era correct with open 6's and 9's.
