1970 Heuer Autavia (Ref. 2446C) Mk II

$ 7,500

The Heuer Autavia came into production in 1933 as a dashboard timer for automotive racing and flying, where the Autavia name is derived, Auto and Aviation. The Autavia was then later introduced in 1962 (The same year Jo Siffert entered Formula One) as the wristwatch we know today, and soon became the flagship for the entire Brand.

The Heuer Autavia ref. 2446C is the second generation of the Autavia wristwatch that features a 40mm EPSA designed case, the same designer as the Super-Compressor dive watches of the 60s. The second execution of the compressor-style 2446s from 1960 featured a red chronograph hand and red dial accents, a small teeth-notched bezel with either a minutes/hours or a tachymetre bezel insert, and fluted pump pushers. The Autavia ref. 2446c and was also produced as a GMT chronograph that featured a slightly different dial design and a "Pepsi" 24-hour bezel. The Heuer Autavia ref. 2446C sports the famous Valjoux 72 chronograph movement and features either a matte black or matte white dial.

CASE & BRACELET

The impressive case exhibits crisp finishing and strong dimensions throughout, along with the characteristic lug chamfers. The case exhibits honest signs of use with minimal evidence of previous polishing present. The original hours/minutes bezel displays honest signs of use with a charming grey fade and some rounded at the edges which is common for this component. The case retains its original fluted pump pushers and "Heuer" signed crown. The factory engravings on the case back are faint but still visible, which is very common for this reference. The watch comes supplied on a 2pc handmade leather strap. The watch also comes with an additional 18mm Heuer tang buckle.

DIAL & HANDS

The beautiful matte black dial with red accents and white sub-dials is remarkably well-preserved, showing no damage or notable elements of age. The sub-dials remain bright white in coloration, showing no discoloration or signs of aging. The tritium markers have taken on an excellent creamy yellow coloration and exhibit no degradation under UV light inspection. The original hands match the dial lume perfectly, under U.V. light inspection the hour hand exhibits light lume loss and remains stable, the minute hand exhibits nominal lume loss as well and is also stable.
