Zodiac
1970s Zodiac Olympos Automatic Gold Cap (Ref. 723-928)
When it comes to vintage watch brands, Zodiac is definitely one of the more under-the-radar options. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, Zodiac was a highly respected challenger to brands like Rolex, Blancpain, and Tudor, mostly thanks to the iconic Sea-Wolf. And perhaps due in part to not having the same clout as some of the aforementioned brands, Zodiac was known for being a bit more adventurous, utilizing bright color schemes and unique case shapes across their offerings.
One of those unique case shapes can be found here, in this 1970s Zodiac Olympos. After the widespread success of the Sea-Wolf throughout the ‘50s, Zodiac was ready to expand their platform, and this was one of the ways they chose to do so. Originally released in 1961, the signature “manta ray” shaped watch offered a much more elegant and dressy alternative to the sporty look of the Sea-Wolf while still being exciting and unique, thanks also to the 2 o’clock crown placement.
Offered here in a gold-capped case, the Olympos is a definite conversation starter with a unique story and a whole lot of mid-century charm.
