Enicar

*Unpolished* 1960s Enicar Alarm 'Gold Plated' (Ref. 477-01-02)

Enicar started out in La Chaux-de-Fonds Switzerland in 1913, eventually becoming one of the more creatively designed vintage “golden era” watches. Luckily for savvy collectors, the brand is still relatively unknown, so their watches remain reasonably priced for the quality they offer.

This particular Enicar is a fun outlier from the brand's vast catalog – one that follows in the footsteps of watches like the Vulcain Cricket, Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox, and other alarm watches. But this one does so with a whole lot of panache, thanks to its unpolished gold-plated 35mm case and matching champagne dial. And even though the overall vibe of the watch is perhaps a bit more dressed-up than casual, there is a nice little easter egg in the alarm hand, which is orange and black checkered and adds a bit of whimsy to the overall package.

CASE & BRACELET

The unpolished gold-plated case of this Enicar Alarm measures 35.5 millimeters and is in near NOS condition, having probably been worn only a handful of times by the original owner. All edges, from the bezel to the case sides and lugs, are sharp and well-defined. It features dual original, Enicar-signed crowns, and the case back is free of marks with all factory engravings deep and legible. The watch is supplied on its original signed two-piece leather strap with matching gold-plated and Enicar-signed tang buckle.

DIAL & HANDS

Nestled within the gold-plated case, the champagne dial completes a striking, monochromatic vibe offset only by the black-enamel inlays within the hour markers and hands, and the black inner minutes track. The center of the Enicar logo is applied, popping off the dial ever so slightly. The dial is in flawless condition, as are all four of the hands and the date wheel. The fourth hand, used to set the alarm, is the outlier, featuring an orange and black checkered motif that pops amidst the otherwise gold and black design of the watch. The four lume plots on the dial, located at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock markers feature a golden patina and exhibit no degradation when inspected under UV light. The lume in the hands has aged a few shades lighter than the dial with no degradation exhibited under UV light inspection.
