1947 Rolex Two-Tone Oyster Perpetual Chronometer '36mm' (Ref. 5031) "Big Bubble Back" W/ Roulette Date Wheel
In the early 1920s when watch brands were competing to create the first successful automatic movements from scratch, Rolex took a different approach. By affixing an automatic rotor mechanism on top of their existing manual wind movements, they ended up creating a very thick Oyster Perpetual case that today we lovingly know as the "Bubble Back".
Stacking the automatic mechanism on top of the manual wind movement proved beneficial, as it allowed the rotor to swing in 360 degrees without obstruction. The addition of the automatic rotor also muffled the existing manual movement, creating a quieter running watch.
This particular Bubble Back ref. 5031 is a truly fantastic example, especially considering its age. Featuring a stainless steel case with 14k yellow gold bezel and crown, a roulette date wheel, and a dial that looks like an watercolor painting, it's a great time capsule and a fun piece that's definitely worth talking about.

CASE & BRACELET
The case features full and symmetrical lugs that show minimal evidence of previous polishing and light wear from use, interestingly the case features lug holes only on the left side of the case, giving the watch a charming asymmetric vintage appeal. The 14k gold engine-turned bezel has aged really well, showing minor signs of wear. The case retains its original "Rolex Super Oyster" crown. The "bubble" case back is in good condition with light signs of use, common for the age of the watch. The watch will come supplied on a 2pc handmade leather strap.
DIAL & HANDS
The beautiful and charming chapter ring "Swiss Made" dial has achieved a warm and attractive coloration with browns, pinks and golds intermixed like watercolors. Apart from the patina, the dial exhibits no scratches or marks. The original radium lume has taken on a tan patina and exhibits expected degradation throughout, though all lume plots remain at least partially intact. The original alpha-style hands are in excellent condition for the watch's age, and match the dial perfectly.
