1972 Rolex Day-Date 18K YG (Ref. 1803) Silver "Minute Track" Dial W/ Black Enamel Markers & Hands

$ 14,500

The Rolex Day-Date is one of the most iconic and beautiful watches in the Rolex catalog. The Rolex Day-Date earned the nickname "President" after it had been rumored that President Dwight Eisenhower began wearing one, however, Eisenhower wore a Rolex 18K yellow gold Oyster Perpetual Datejust which Rolex gifted to him in 1953. However the nickname President is quite fitting for the day date as  Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, Reagan, Nixon and Roosevelt,  all wore the Rolex Day-Date and is a symbol of status and luxury as the Rolex Day-Date is only made in precious metals most commonly 18k yellow gold and possesses both the day and date complications within the movement.

CASE & BRACELET

The 18K yellow gold case retains symmetrical, evenly balanced lugs that have been previously polished in the past and exhibit signs of gentle use. The 18K yellow gold fluted bezel has been previously polished and retains defined edges with minimal signs of use present. The case back features a hand engraving that reads "Ed, From Dad, 2/7/80". The 18K yellow gold President bracelet retains 18 links that show minor stretch and will fit up to a 7 1/4-inch wrist.

DIAL & HANDS

The well preserved silver sunburst "pie-pan" dial is a truly uncommon configuration, employing a numbered minute track along with black enameled minute markers and black hands, making for a striking dial composition that is both beautiful and unique within the reference range. The dial exhibits very minimal aging apart from some markings above the hand stack. The tritium lume plots have taken on a creamy eggshell patina, under UV light inspection the 3, 6, and 7 o'clock plots exhibit some degradation, though it is not noticeable to the naked eye. The tritium hands match the dial almost perfectly, under UV light inspection the minute hand displays some superficial cracking and remains stable while the hour hand remains fully intact. The metallic date wheel is original with "open" 6's and 9's, and the day wheel is in English.
