1952 Rolex Oyster-Perpetual 18K YG (Ref. 6084) "Big Bubble Back" Patina Dial

$ 5,450

In the early 1920s when watch brands were competing to create the first successful automatic movements from scratch, Rolex took a different approach. By affixing an automatic rotor mechanism on top of their existing manual wind movements, they ended up creating a very thick Oyster Perpetual case that we lovingly know as the "Bubble Back". Stacking the automatic mechanism on top of the manual wind movement proved beneficial, as it allowed the rotor to swing in 360 degrees without obstruction. The addition of the automatic rotor also muffled the existing manual movement, creating a quieter running watch.

With an array of dial variants and models, Bubble Backs offer a charming presence on the wrist without breaking the bank. We love the unique patina on this example with the elevated presence of 18K yellow gold.
