1955 Rolex Oyster-Perpetual (Ref. 6532) Black Gilt "Depth Rating" Dial W/ Flat Sides Case

A beautiful and early example of the Rolex Oyster-Perpetual, known as the ref. 6532, features a very unique and rare case only seen in a few references from the 1950s era, which is much more streamlined in its aesthetic by lacking the rounded case dimensions more commonly seen from an Oyster case by Rolex. These "flat sides" Rolexes are prized amongst collectors for their aesthetically pleasing vintage aesthetics and unique configurations.

While depth ratings being printed on the dial is extremely common to the Submariner line for Rolex, it is exceptionally rare in every other model made by The Crown, though not unheard of. It is believed that in an effort for Rolex to market the Oyster case as a waterproof wristwatch across their model offering, outside of the Submariner model, they also printed the depth ratings on on the dial of other models as well (such as the GMT-Master, Datejust, and even the Oyster-Perpetual), on a very limited and experimental basis.

Apart from the unique depth rating and interesting case profiling, this specific ref. 6532 features a truly stunning black gilt center "pie-pan" dial with gilt markers and hands, rounding this example out to not only be a rare and collectible model, but a beautiful timepiece as well.

DIAL & HANDS

The original, very well-preserved, and attractive black gilt center "pie-pan" dial features gilt markers and hands along with a depth rating printed on the dial that reads "50m = 165ft". The dial itself exhibits consistent and gentle aging throughout, adding to the vintage aesthetic, with no actual damage or prominent marks present. The radium lume plots have achieved a dark, almost black coloration that blends in with the dial and all remain present with varying degrees of degradation throughout, though it is not visible to the naked eye. The original radium gilt dauphine hands match the dial patina almost perfectly and exhibit no degradation when inspected under UV light.
