1975 Tudor Snowflake Submariner Ref. 9411/0

Vintage Tudor Snowflake Advertisement

The Tudor “Snowflake” is the nickname given to the Tudor Submariners with distinctive features such as the square hour markers and a unique snowflake hands that were introduced by Rolex/Tudor to increase visibility in low light conditions. In production from 1968 to the mid-1980s, dial variants are commonly found in black and blue and can feature a date complication. However, there is more to the Tudor’s Snowflake Submariner line than its characteristic visual features.

The Tudor Snowflake Submariners, like the other Submariners produced by Rolex and Tudor, have a long-standing history and were supplied to military forces including the U.S. Navy and the Marine Nationale (French Navy).

The second-generation Tudor Submariners marked the watchmaker’s transition from caliber 390 movements produced by Parmigiani Fleurier SA (Fleurier) to movements produced by Swiss watchmaker ETA which made the Tudor Snowflake Submariners the first Tudor watches to use these modified ETA movements.

This specific example would make a nice addition to a growing collection or be a great first piece as it retains the classic and timeless look of the Submariner while being unique and eye-catching as a result of the distinguishing dial and hand configuration.

DIAL & HANDS

The Black matte "snowflake" dial is in wonderful vintage condition. The matte portion of the dial itself has taken on an interesting velvety textured patina; sometimes referred to as a confetti dial due to the fact that the matte dial consists of flecks of blue, green, grey, and black that make up the base color of the dial. There is some degradation on the right side of the dial by the rehaut that can be seen when looking at the side of the dial at a slight angle. The lume plots have taken on a charming ivory patina.  The lume plots when viewed under U.V. light show no lume loss or degradation. The original "snowflake" hands have been restored professionally by Los Angeles Watch Works using tritium to match the coloration of the lume plots on the dial.
